Pivot with Purpose: Strategies to Execute Life Changes with Confidence

Pivot with Purpose: Strategies to Execute Life Changes with Confidence

October 01, 2024

It was a chilly February night and despite having hung up my boots years ago, I decided to join in a neighborhood soccer match.  One traumatic injury and three surgeries later, I found myself staring at an X-ray of my knee, riddled with some impressive hardware! This unintended set back became the catalyst for the career change I’d been needing and dreaming about for years.

My job at that time was a whirlwind of cramped rental cars, long drives, and hotels. It wasn’t exactly ideal for knee surgery recovery! So, partly forced, but mostly inspired, I knew it was time to lay the groundwork for a major life transition. Many of us reach a point where we yearn for more - more control over our time, more fulfilling work, or a chance to make a real difference.

If you’re considering a major life transition - be it a career pivot, early retirement, or taking time for personal growth - you're not alone. Recent studies show that 59% of employees feel stuck in their current jobs and 51% are burned out. Many desire change, but are unsure how to make it happen. Stagnation isn’t just a career killer; it can impact your relationships and health.

Transitions are tricky and roadblocks are inevitable. However, with some guidance and clear directional planning, those roadblocks can become minor speed bumps on your journey to a more fulfilling career and life.

Here is the playbook that worked for me, and may work for you too:

1. Know your number: Get specific and calculate exactly how much your household spends annually. Then multiply it by the maximum time you might go without a consistent income. This becomes your financial safety net. For example, if your annual expenses are $80,000 and you estimate a two-year transition, aim for $160,000 in savings. It sounds daunting, but having this cushion will significantly reduce anxiety and boost your confidence as you embark on your new adventure. At Carnegie Private Wealth, we use Right Capital's Budget Analysis Featureto help clients with these projections.

2. Become an expert on your current benefits: I adopted a “leave nothing on the table” approach. I dug deep into the minutiae of our company’s benefits - vesting periods, deferred compensation plans, employee stock purchase programs, and even the nitty-gritty health insurance options. Some of these vehicles allowed me to defer current income into future years, essentially creating my own “severance package.” Knowing my tax bracket would likely be lower during my transition, this strategy was a double win. Don’t shy away from complexity. We utilize leading tax planning solutions, like Holistiplan, to provide confidence and understanding around these critical decisions.

3. Beware of the Golden Handcuffs: Be cautious about long-term financial commitments that keep you tied to your current income.  Things like private school tuition, club memberships, or that tempting vacation home can be wonderful - but they can also become obstacles to your transition dreams. If any of these might hinder your ability to make a change, it might be time to press pause! Remember, it’s not about giving up luxuries forever - it’s about prioritizing your long term happiness and fulfillment.

4. Get your spouse on board: This one is crucial and I’ve learned it the hard way. Moving too fast without your partner’s full buy-in can create unnecessary tension. Instead, make the journey a team effort, it’ll be far more rewarding. Show your spouse you’re serious about this transition. For me, that meant obtaining my CFP®certification while still employed. The two-year process of studying and test-taking demonstrated my commitment and helped my wife see the concrete steps I was taking towards our shared future.

Was all this effort worth it? Absolutely!  The joy and honor I feel when a couple trusts us with something as sensitive as their finances is unmatched. Plus the personal rewards are immeasurable; taking my son to school each day, enjoying weekly breakfast dates with my daughter, and giving my wife a much-needed break from being the only parent running the soccer practice carpool! These moments are priceless.

Whatever the transition is that you face, remember that with careful planning, a clear vision, and an experienced team in your corner, you can turn those roadblocks into manageable speed bumps.
